RIYADH, KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA
KING ABDULLAH FINANCIAL DISTRICT (KAFD) MONORAIL
2009
King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) in Riyadh is a completely new infrastructure providing a new way of working environment. The master plan provides a fully integrated public transport for the development, which can be linked together with the proposed city monorail system. The proposed scheme was submitted via SCOMI Int. Ltd. for a tender bid in 2009.
The architectural concept adopts a forward-looking, neat, light, and transparent built-form with a state-of-the-art building system. The unique form appeared as a ‘folded-panel’ in multiple layers. The roof form is achieved using a simple steel truss work concealed by the ‘Titanium Zink’ at the outer layer and aluminum spandrel ceiling at the inner layer.
The multifaceted and undulating ‘Titanium Zink’ roofing sheet is ‘sliced’ and ‘slides’ side by side to create the intricate relief of openings along the undulating edge. The relief tracks along the edge allow the formation of skylights at various apertures to capture diffused and reflected penetration of natural daylight into the station interior. The primary goal is to amplify animated scenes of transit space in the corporate city using natural lighting articulation.
